I received a text saying that my flight was delayed for 4 hours. 

This meant that I would miss my connection. My friend who was going to land 2 hours before me and was going to wait for me was now going to possibly have to wait 6 hours. 

So I started looking on the airline website for the new connection times and I remembered that there is an earlier flight leaving Vancouver. So I called the airline and lo and behold I was able to be booked on the earlier flight with an earlier connection. 

As a result my friend and I will now be on the same flight for the last leg of our trip! How does it get any better than that?
